Routine is great because it is convenient. It helps to conserve your energy for more important matters. But an overreliance on it can get you caught up in the continuous cycle of the same work practises and household rituals, week after week. Before you know it, you’re existing not living. You’re not alone if you feel like you are stuck in a rut.

If you want more from life, the best way to achieve it is to – well – make a change.  If the answer is so simple, why do so many people feel this way? Sometimes it’s a fear of failure, lack of confidence, or not really understanding what and how to change. As we age, many of us get more hesitant about doing things outside our comfort zones.  It can be all too easy to find reasons not to try something new.

Living an enriching life is sometimes about taking risks. By getting out there and trying new things you can speed up and sharpen your vision, hone your creative skills, build your perception muscles and release endorphins. I don’t suggest you need to try something as drastic as base jumping (although it could spice up your routine well and truly). Sometimes, all it takes to break free from your comfort zone is to change one thing in your daily routine. It could be changing the type of books you read, visit a new coffee shop or try wearing a different colour. You’ll stave off boredom, foster creativity and might discover something new that delights you.

Here are 11 more ideas to help you break out of your comfort zone.
